5 S I G N S It May Be Time for a Refresh

Take a look at the signage your customers see every day. Does it accurately represent your brand? Does it look current and professional? Most importantly, is it attracting the right customers?

Signage is often one of the first impressions someone has with your business. Before they visit your website, talk to your team, or walk through your door, they may have already formed an impression based on what they see outside your business or throughout your physical space.

1 Your Signage Doesn't Match Your Current Brand

Q: Has your logo changed? Updated your colors? Refreshed your website? Developed a new visual identity?

If your marketing materials have evolved but your physical signage hasn't, you may have a branding disconnect.

Your website, social media, printed materials, packaging, and signage should all feel like they belong to the same business. Consistent branding helps customers recognize your organization and creates a more professional, trustworthy impression.

Your signage should be an extension of your brand—not a reminder of what your brand looked like ten years ago.

2 Your Signage Looks Outdated

Design trends change, businesses change, and your customers change.

Maybe your signage has faded over time. Maybe the typography feels dated. Perhaps the colors no longer reflect your brand, or the message doesn't speak to the customers you're trying to reach today.

An outdated sign can unintentionally communicate that the business itself is outdated.

That doesn't necessarily mean you need to start from scratch. A signage refresh can sometimes make a dramatic difference. Updating colors, typography, imagery, messaging, or layout can give your signage a fresh, modern appearance while maintaining the elements your customers already recognize.

As a general guideline, businesses should evaluate their branding and signage every 3–5 years...

Even if they don't ultimately change anything.

But here's the important distinction: your brand and your signage don't necessarily need to be completely redesigned every 3–5 years.

Sometimes a brand refresh is all that's needed. The same is true for signage. You may not need a completely new sign. A redesigned layout, updated colors, new messaging, or coordinated graphics throughout your space can give your business a fresh appearance while maintaining the recognition you've already built.

3 Your Signage Is Difficult to Understand

 Good signage communicates quickly.

People shouldn't have to stop and study a sign to figure out who you are, what you offer, or where they need to go. If your signage contains too much information, competing fonts, tiny type, or unclear messaging, your audience may simply move on.

Effective graphic signage considers hierarchy, readability, color, scale, placement, and viewing distance. The goal isn't to say everything.

The goal is to make sure people see and understand the right thing.

4 Are You Attracting the Right Customers?

Q: Does your signage appeal to the customers you actually want to reach?

Your signage communicates more than information. It communicates personality.

Is your business professional and sophisticated? Friendly and approachable? Creative and energetic? Traditional and established? Your signage should help convey that personality.

If you're trying to attract a different audience than you did when your current signage was created, it may be time to reconsider your visual message.

The right business signage design can help create an immediate connection between your brand and your ideal customer.

5 Your Signage Doesn't Feel Connected

Q: Do you have one look on your storefront, another at your front desk, something different on your event displays, and another style on your promotional materials?

When individual pieces of signage are designed independently, your brand can start to feel fragmented.

A cohesive signage system creates consistency throughout your physical environment. From directional signage and banners to wall graphics and promotional displays, each piece can work together to reinforce your brand.

Q: Is Your Signage Doing It's Job or Does it Need a Facelift?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions above, it may be time to take another look at your signage. A signage update doesn't always mean replacing everything. Sometimes the most effective solution is a strategic refresh that brings your physical presence back in line with your current brand and your current customers.
